Dale was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI and now lives four blocks from his childhood home.

He is degreed both from North Carolina School of the Arts and Michigan State University.

He started his professional career with young artist programs in Santa Fe and Aspen. He was part of the Minnesota Opera (favorite role was Maxmillian from Candide), and then studied and worked in England. He toured with Midwest Opera (part of the Minnesota Opera Company) with the role of Schaunard in LaBoheme. He has worked with Opera Grand Rapids, Tri-Cities Opera, Battle Creek Opera/Symphony, to name a few, in a variety of roles in opera. He has concertized throughout his career, with one of his favorite being the Baritone role in St. Matthews Passion, directed by XXX XXXX.

His teaching and coaching has been part of his life since he graduated from college. He has taught 100’s of students, many of whom now have careers in performance or music education. He has been the head of the Voice Area of the Music Department at Grand Valley State University for over 20 years. He founded the Opera Theater at GVSU and at this writing is in it’s 15th year, as they are preparing for Opera Scenes and 3 Penny Opera.

Dale is an avid gardner and reader. He is married to Mary Witte and together they raised Derek and Justin Witte and are now the proud grandparents of three.
